ALTERNATIVE BEVERAGES: As Carbonated Soft Drink Sales Sag, Alternative Beverages Pick Up Steam

New Moody’s report confirms ongoing decline in carbonated soft drink consumption in U.S., as health-conscious consumers with more spending money switch to ready-made coffees, teas, organic juices, enhanced waters, all perceived as higher quality, more healthful. Though alternative drinks are still small market compared to carbonated soft drinks, beverage makers see benefit from shift in consumer preference. Despite lower volume sales, alternative drinks are inherently higher value: premium prices mean higher profit. Moody’s says large scale, cash-rich Coca-Cola, PepsiCo are well-positioned to develop strong alternative beverage portfolios.
