Better-For-You Trend Gains Prominence In Snack Industry

August 20, 2020: 12:00 AM EST
Mel Festejo of American Key Food Products (Closter, N.J.) says the snack and bakery industry is getting better at meeting consumer demands for "the delicate balance of 'healthy indulgence'” by providing better-for-you snacks and baked goods. The better-for-you balance is “particularly handy” in snacks, he says, because snacks have gone from being sometime-treats to becoming today's take on the meal. This has opened the door to innovations like seaweed- and seed-studded crackers, and gluten-free snacks; snacks that cater to diet and health trends like paleo, keto, and vegan; snacks that address fitness, mental health, and rest; and snacks that appeal to consumers following flexitarian and plant-based diets.[Image Credit: © Sabine Schulte from Pixabay]
