Convenience Stores Critique UK Government HFSS Legislation

August 31, 2022: 12:00 AM EST
Convenience stores are critiquing the U.K. Government’s restrictions on HFSS products, which are to take effect this October. The legislation restricts where impulse sweets and snack foods and beverages can be displayed in shops and how they can be promoted. The rules apply to brick-and-mortar stores larger than 2,000 square feet in size with 50 or more employees, and chains or franchises with 50 or more employees and online marketplaces. The Association of Convenience Stores states the restrictions will affect between 5,000 and 10,000 convenience stores, depending on how the Government defines franchises. The ACS believes applying the regulations to convenience stores is an extreme measure that will ultimately punish small businesses and will fail to deliver significant public health gains, as the convenience store sector accounts for less than a quarter of the grocery market.
