January 23, 2023: 12:00 AM EST
According to Mondelēz International’s fourth annual State of Snacking report, consumers worldwide are prioritizing snacking, despite rising costs and economic challenges. The report tracks snacking attitudes and behaviors among thousands of consumers surveyed across 12 countries. It found that 71 percent of consumers snack at least twice a day and are increasingly replacing meals with snacks; 55 percent report a higher likelihood to eat a snack across all three standard mealtimes. 67 percent would buy fewer of their favorite snack brands rather than generic alternatives, regardless of cost. Consumers are more conscious about how snacking affects their mental and physical health, as well as the planet. 78 percent take time to savor indulgent snacks; 61 percent portion out snacks before eating them; and 68 percent check nutrition labels on snacks before buying them. 46 percent feel guilty when enjoying indulgent snacks or treats. 63 percent agree that snacks with a higher environmental impact should cost more, and 64 percent would pay more for snacks that are better for the environment. 7 in 10 consumers prioritize snacks that have less packaging and 72 percent typically recycle it.
