FDA Says Egg-Free Mayonnaise Is Not Mayonnaise, But Company Disagrees

August 25, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Though the FDA says the Just Mayo label is misleading, Hampton Creek CEO Josh Tetrick refuses to change it. He sees “no reason” to give the product a new name, even though FDA rules require that mayonnaise by definition must contain eggs. Just Mayo, and sister product Just Mayo Sriracha, are egg-free. According to Tetrick, the label quite clearly states that there is no egg in the products, so there is nothing misleading. The FDA told the company it had to come up with a plan for correcting the problem by August 27. Tetrick says he’s been in touch with FDA staff and is confident the problem can be worked out without renaming.
